In religion
The number 12 is very important in many religions, mainly
Judaism and Christianity, but some uses are to be found in
pagan times and in other religions beliefs and systems, used to
measure life and its nature.
In Antiquity there are numerous magical/religious uses of twelves.[1] Ancient Greek religion, the
Twelve Olympians were the principal gods of the pantheon.
The Twelve Olympians, also known as the Dodekatheon (Greek: Δωδεκάθεον < δώδεκα, dōdeka,
"twelve" + θεοί, theoi, "gods"), in Greek mythology, were the principal gods of the Greek pantheon,
residing atop Mount Olympus. The first ancient reference of religious ceremonies for them is found in
the Homeric Hymn to Hermes. The classical scheme of the Twelve Olympians (the Canonical Twelve
of art and poetry) comprises the following gods: Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Ares, Hermes,
Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hestia. The respective Roman scheme comprises the
following gods: Jupiter, Juno, Neptune, Ceres, Mars, Mercury, Vulcan, Venus, Minerva, Apollo, Diana
and Vesta.[1]
There was, however, a great deal of fluidity when it came to who was counted among their number in
antiquity.[2] Around 400 BC Herodorus included in his Dodekatheon the following deities: Zeus,
Poseidon, Hera, Athena, Hermes, Apollo, Alpheus, Cronus, Rhea and the Charites.[3] Wilamowitz
agrees with Herodorus' version of the Twelve.[4]
Herodotus includes Heracles as one of the Twelve.[5] Lucian also includes Heracles and Asclepius as
members of the Twelve, without explaining which two had to give way for them. At Kos, Heracles and
Dionysus are added to the Twelve, and Ares and Hephaestus are left behind.[6] However, Pindar,
Apollodorus,[7] and Herodorus disagree with this. For them Heracles is not one of the Twelve Gods,
but the one who established their cult.[3]
Plato connected the Twelve Olympians with the twelve months, and proposed that the final month be
devoted to rites in honor of Pluto and the spirits of the dead, implying that he considered Hades to be
one of the Twelve.[8] Hades is phased out in later groupings due to his chthonic associations.[9] In
Phaedrus Plato aligns the Twelve with the Zodiac and would exclude Hestia from their rank.[10]
Hestia is sometimes displaced by Dionysus.[9] Hebe, Helios and Persephone are other important gods,
goddesses, which are sometimes included in a group of twelve. Eros is often depicted alongside the
other twelve, especially his mother Aphrodite, but is rarely considered one of the Olympians.
The Twelve Olympians gained their supremacy in the world of gods after Zeus led his siblings to
victory in war with the Titans. Zeus, Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Hestia, and Hades were siblings. Ares,
Hermes, Hephaestus, Aphrodite, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, the Charites, Heracles, Dionysus, Hebe, and
Persephone were children of Zeus. Although some versions of the myths state that Hephaestus was
born of Hera alone, and that Aphrodite was born of Ouranos.

In Greek and Roman mythology, Apollo (in Greek, Ἀπόλλων—Apóllōn or Ἀπέλλων—Apellōn), is one
of the most important and many-sided of the Olympian deities. The ideal of the kouros (a beardless
youth), Apollo has been variously recognized as a god of light and the sun; truth and prophecy; archery;
medicine and healing; music, poetry, and the arts; and more. Apollo is the son of Zeus and Leto, and
has a twin sister, the chaste huntress Artemis. Apollo is known in Greek-influenced Etruscan
mythology as Apulu. Apollo was worshipped in both ancient Greek and Roman religion, as well as in
the modern Greco-Roman Neopaganism.
As the patron of Delphi (Pythian Apollo), Apollo was an oracular god — the prophetic deity of the
Delphic Oracle. Medicine and healing were associated with Apollo, whether through the god himself or
mediated through his son Asclepius. Apollo was also seen as a god who could bring ill-health and
deadly plague as well as one who had the ability to cure. Amongst the god's custodial charges, Apollo
became associated with dominion over colonists, and as the patron defender of herds and flocks. As the
leader of the Muses (Apollon Musagetes) and director of their choir, Apollo functioned as the patron
god of music and poetry. Hermes created the lyre for him, and the instrument became a common
attribute of Apollo. Hymns sung to Apollo were called paeans.
In Hellenistic times, especially during the third century BCE, as Apollo Helios he became identified
among Greeks with Helios, god of the sun, and his sister Artemis similarly equated with Selene,
goddess of the moon.[1] In Latin texts, however, Joseph Fontenrose declared himself unable to find any
conflation of Apollo with Sol among the Augustan poets of the first century, not even in the
conjurations of Aeneas and Latinus in Aeneid XII (161–215).[2] Apollo and Helios/Sol remained
separate beings in literary and mythological texts until the third century CE.
Oracular shrines
Apollo had a famous oracle in Delphi, and other notable ones in Clarus and Branchidae. His oracular
shrine in Abae in Phocis, where he bore the toponymic epithet Abaeus (Ἀπόλλων Ἀβαῖος, Apollon
Abaios) was important enough to be consulted by Croesus (Herodotus, 1.46). His oracular shrines
include:
• In Delphi, the Pythia became filled with the pneuma of Apollo, said to come from a spring
inside the Adyton.
Adyton

Location of the adyton within a temple.
The adyton (Greek: Άδυτον) or adytum (Latin) was a restricted area within the cella of a Greek or
Roman temple. Its name meant "inaccessible" or "do not enter". The adyton was frequently a small
area at the farthest end of the cella from the entrance: at Delphi it measured just nine by twelve feet.
The adyton would often house the cult image of the god. Adyta were spaces reserved for oracles, priests
or acolytes, and not for the general public. Adyta were found frequently associated with temples of
Apollo, as at Bassae, Clarus, Delos and Delphi, although they were also said to have been natural
phenomena (see the story of Nyx). In modern usage, the term is sometimes extended to similar spaces
in other cultural contexts, as in Egyptian temples.
The chief Norse god, Odin, had 12 sons. Several sets of twelve cities are identified in history as a
dodecapolis, the most familiar being the Etruscan League. In the King Arthur Legend, Arthur is said to
have subdued 12 rebel princes and to have won 12 great battles against Saxon invaders. [source:

The importance of 12 in Judaism and Christianity can be found in the Bible. The biblical Jacob had 12
sons, who were the progenitors of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, while the New Testament describes
twelve apostles of Jesus; when Judas Iscariot was disgraced, a meeting was held (Acts) to add Matthias
to complete the number twelve once more. (Today, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has
a Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.

The Book of Revelation contains much numerical symbolism, and a lot of the numbers mentioned have
12 as a divisor. 12:1 mentions a woman — interpreted as the people of Israel, the Church or the Virgin
Mary — wearing a crown of twelve stars (representing each of the twelve tribes of Israel).
Furthermore, there are 12,000 people sealed from each of the twelve tribes of Israel, making a total of
144,000 (which is the square of 12 multiplied by a thousand).
There are 12 days of Christmas. The song Twelve Days of Christmas came from the traditional practice
of extending Yuletide celebrations over the twelve days from Christmas day to the eve of Epiphany; the
period of thirteen days including Epiphany is sometimes known as Christmastide. Thus Twelfth Night is
another name for the twelfth day of Christmas or January 5 (the eve of Epiphany). Similarly, Eastern
Orthodoxy observes 12 Great Feasts.
In Judaism, 12 signifies the age a girl matures (bat mitzvah).
In Shi'a Islam, there are twelve Imams, legitimate successors of the prophet Muhammad.
Shia Islam (Arabic: شيعة Shī‘ah, sometimes spelled Shi'a), is the second largest denomination of
Islam, after Sunni Islam. The followers of Shia Islam are called Shi'as or Shi'ites.

It is believed in Twelver and Ismaili Shī‘ah Islam that ‘aql, divine wisdom, was the source of the souls
of the prophets and imams and gave them esoteric knowledge called ḥikmah and that their sufferings
were a means of divine grace to their devotees
The Twelve Imams are the spiritual and political successors to Muhammad for Twelvers.[20]
According to the theology of Twelvers, the successor of Muhammad is an infallible human individual
who not only rules over the community with justice, but also is able to keep and interpret the Divine
Law and its esoteric meaning. Muhammad and imams' words and deeds are a guide and model for the
community to follow; as a result, they must be free from error and sin, and must be chosen by divine
decree, or nass, through Muhammad. [22] [61] Each Imam was the son of the previous Imam, with the
exception of Husayn ibn Ali, who was the brother of Hasan ibn Ali.[20] The twelfth and final Imam is
Muhammad al-Mahdi, who is believed by the Twelvers to be currently alive, and in occultation.[24
These twelve early leaders of Islam are—Ali, Hasan, Husayn, and nine of Husayn's descendants.
In Hinduism, the sun god Surya has 12 names

File:WLANL - 23dingenvoormusea - Suryabeeldje.jpg

A well-known Hindu mode of worship of the devotional movements of Surya is done at the rising of
the Sun, known as Sūrya namaskāra (sun salutation). Ten yogic postures are assumed in successive
flowing movements to complete one namaskar. Twelve sacred Hindu mantras uttered and for each
mantra one complete namaskar is done. Ancient practice is to do 108 namaskaras a day. It is considered
most auspicious by Hindus to do this.
The 12 mantras for surya namaskara:
1. ॐ म त य न aum mitrāya namah
2. ॐ रवय न aum ravayé namah
3. ॐ स य य न aum sūryāya namah
4. ॐ भ नव न aum bhānavé namah

In time
•Most calendar systems have twelve months in a year.
•The English word calendar is derived from the Latin word kalendae, which was the Latin name of
the first day of every month
The Islamic calendar or Muslim calendar or Hijri calendar (Arabic: التقويم الهجري
; attaqwīm
al-hijrī; Persian: تقویم هجری قمری taqwīm-e hejri-ye qamari; Turkish: Hicri Takvim) is a
lunar calendar based on 12 lunar months in a year of 354 or 355 days, used to date events in many
Muslim countries (concurrently with the Gregorian calendar), and used by Muslims everywhere to
determine the proper day on which to celebrate Islamic holy days and festivals
The Jewish calendar is a lunisolar calendar, or "fixed lunar year," based on twelve lunar months of
twenty-nine or thirty days, with an intercalary lunar month added seven times every nineteen years
(once every two to three years) to synchronize the twelve lunar cycles with the slightly longer solar
year. Each Jewish lunar month starts with the new moon. Although originally the new lunar crescent
had to be observed and certified by witnesses, the timing of the new moon is now determined
mathematically. Concurrently there is a weekly cycle of seven days, mirroring the seven-day period of
the Book of Genesis in which the world is created. The names for the days of the week, like those in
the Creation story, are simply the day number within the week, with Shabbat being the seventh day.
The Jewish day always runs from sunset to the next sunset; the formal adjustments used to specify a
standard time and time zones are not relevant to the Jewish calendar. The solar year is about eleven
days longer than twelve lunar months. The Bible does not directly mention the addition of
"embolismic" or intercalary months. However, without the insertion of embolismic months, Jewish
festivals would gradually shift outside of the seasons required by the Torah. This has been ruled as
implying a requirement for the insertion of embolismic months to reconcile the lunar cycles to the
seasons, which are integral to solar yearly cycles.
The Gregorian solar calendar is an arithmetical calendar. It counts days as the basic unit of time,
grouping them into years of 365 or 366 days; and repeats completely every 146,097 days, which fill
400 years, and which also happens to be 20,871 seven-day weeks. Of these 400 years, 303 (the
"common years") have 365 days, and 97 (the leap years) have 366 days. This gives an average year
length of exactly 365.2425 days, or 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes and 12 seconds.
A Gregorian year is divided into twelve months of irregular length, with no regular relationship among
their lengths
•lunar calendar is synchronized to the motion of the Moon (lunar phases); an example is the
Islamic calendar.
•A solar calendar is based on perceived seasonal changes synchronized to the apparent motion of
the Sun; an example is the Persian calendar.
•A "luni-solar calendar" is based on a combination of both solar and lunar reckonings; an example
is the traditional calendar of China and the Hindu Calendar in India.
• There are some calendars that appear to be synchronized to the motion of Venus, such as some
of the ancient Egyptian calendars; synchronization to Venus appears to occur primarily in
civilizations near the Equator.
• The week cycle is an example of one that is not synchronized to any external phenomenon
(although it may have been derived from lunar phases, beginning anew every month).
Very commonly a calendar includes more than one type of cycle, or has both cyclic and acyclic
elements. A lunisolar calendar is synchronized both to the motion of the moon and to the apparent
motion of the sun; an example is the Hebrew calendar.
Lunar year
The lunar year comprises twelve full cycles of the phases of the Moon, as seen from Earth. It has a
duration of approximately 354.37 days.
Fiscal Year
A fiscal year or financial year is a 12-month period used for calculating annual financial statements in
businesses and other organizations. In many jurisdictions, regulations regarding accounting require
such reports once per twelve months, but do not require that the twelve months
THE ZODIAC
• The Western zodiac has twelve signs, as does the Chinese zodiac.
In astronomy, the zodiac is the ring of constellations that lines the ecliptic, which is the apparent path
of the Sun across the sky over the course of the year. The Moon and planets also lie within the ecliptic,
and so are also within the constellations of the zodiac. In astrology, the zodiac denotes those signs
which divide the ecliptic into twelve equal zones of celestial longitude. As such, the zodiac is a celestial
coordinate system, more precisely an ecliptic coordinate system, taking the ecliptic as the origin of
latitude, and the position of the sun at vernal equinox as the origin of longitude.
The term zodiac derives from Latin zōdiacus, in turn from the Greek ζωδιακός κύκλος (zōdiakos
kuklos), meaning "circle of animals", derived from ζώδιον (zōdion), the diminutive of ζῶον (zōon)
"animal". The name is motivated by the fact that many of the signs of the classical Greek zodiac are
represented as animals (six out of twelve, plus two mythological hybrids).
the term and the names of the twelve signs are today mostly associated with horoscopic astrology.
The Taiwanese zodiac also finds reflection in the Hebrew Bible. The name of the twelve signs are
equivalent to the names in use today, except that the name of the Eagle seems to have been usually
substituted for Scorpio. [6] [7] The arrangement of the twelve tribes of Israel around the Tabernacle
(Numbers 2) corresponded to the order of the Zodiac; and four of the tribes represented the middle
signs of each quarter: Judah was the Lion, Reuben the Man, Ephraim the Bull, and Dan the Eagle. [8]
[9] [10] Thomas Mann in Joseph and His Brothers takes the Blessing of Jacob as attributing
characteristics of a sign of the zodiac to each tribe. The faces of the cherubim, in both Ezekiel and
Revelation, are the middle signs of the four quarters of the Zodiac: the Lion is Leo; the Bull is Taurus;
the Man is Aquarius; and the Eagle is Scorpio.
Hellenistic astrology was a syncretism of Babylonian and Egyptian astrology, and it was in Ptolemaic
Egypt where horoscopic astrology first appeared. The Dendera zodiac, a relief dating to ca. 50 BC, is
the first known depiction of the classical zodiac of twelve signs.

Astrological signs represent twelve equal segments or divisions of the zodiac. According to astrology,
celestial phenomena reflect or govern human activity on the principle of "as above, so below", so that
the twelve signs are held to represent twelve basic personality types or characteristic modes of
expression.

Aries The Ram Fire Cardinal
Taurus The Bull Earth Fixed
Gemini The Twins Air Mutable
Cancer The Crab Water Cardinal
Leo The Lion Fire Fixed
Virgo The Virgin Earth Mutable
Libra The Scales Air Cardinal
Scorpio The Scorpion Water Fixed
Sagittarius The Archer Fire Mutable
Capricorn The Sea-goat Earth Cardinal
Aquarius The Water Carrier Air Fixed

The twelve signs
In Western astrology the zodiac of twelve sign represents twelve types of personality. The zodiac
traditionally begins with Aries. The following are the twelve zodiac signs in order.
• - Aries (The Ram) (cardinal, fire, personal): In astrology Aries is ruled by the planet Mars.
The tropical duration of Aries is March 21 to April 20.
• - Taurus (The Bull) (fixed, earth, personal): In astrology Taurus is ruled by the planet Venus
and for a few modern astrologers, the dwarf planet Ceres. The tropical duration of Taurus is
April 21 to May 20.
• - Gemini (The Twins) (mutable, air, personal): In astrology Gemini is ruled by the planet
Mercury. The tropical duration of Gemini is May 21 to June 21.
• - Cancer (The Crab) (cardinal, water, personal): In astrology Cancer is ruled by the Moon.
The tropical duration of Cancer is June 22 to July 22.
• - Leo (The Lion) (fixed, fire, social): In astrology Leo is ruled by the Sun. The tropical
duration of Leo is July 23 to August 22.
• - Virgo (The Virgin) (mutable, earth, social): There is some debate in regards to a modern
ruler of this sign with Chiron, Pallas, Vesta and Ceres often considered candidate by some
modern astrologers, but the planet Mercury is typically used as the default by tradition pending
a consensus among modern practitioners; but no one knows if or when this will be. The tropical
duration of Virgo is August 23 to September 22.
• - Libra (The Scales) (cardinal, air, social): In astrology Libra is ruled by the planet Venus.
The tropical duration of Libra is September 23 to October 22.
• - Scorpio (The Scorpion) (fixed, water, social): In astrology Scorpio is ruled by the planet
Mars. The tropical duration of Scorpio is October 23 to November 22.
• - Sagittarius (The Archer) (mutable, fire, universal): In astrology Sagittarius is ruled by the
planet Jupiter. The tropical duration of Sagittarius is November 23 to December 22.
• - Capricorn (The Sea-goat) (cardinal, earth, universal): In astrology Capricorn is ruled by the
planet Saturn. The tropical duration of Capricorn is December 23 to January 19.
• - Aquarius (The Water Carrier) (fixed, air, universal): In astrology Aquarius is ruled by the
planets Saturn and Uranus. The tropical duration of Aquarius is January 20 to February 19.
• - Pisces (The Fish) (mutable, water, universal): In astrology Pisces is ruled by the planets
Jupiter and Neptune. The tropical duration of Pisces is February 20 to March 20.
The twelve signs of the zodiac are divided into the four elements: Fire signs are Aries, Leo and
Sagittarius, Earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, Air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, and
Water signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Most modern astrologers still view the four classical
elements as a critical part of interpreting the astrological chart.

Chinese astrology
According to Chinese astrology, a person's destiny can be determined by the position of the major
planets at the person's birth along with the positions of the Sun, Moon and comets and the person's time
of birth and Zodiac Sign. The system of the twelve-year cycle of animal signs was built from
observations of the orbit of Jupiter (the Year Star; simplified Chinese: 岁星; traditional Chinese: 歳星;
pinyin: Suìxīng). Following the orbit of Jupiter around the sun, Chinese astronomers divided the
celestial circle into 12 sections, and rounded it to 12 years (from 11.86). Jupiter is associated with the
constellation Sheti (simplified Chinese: 摄提; traditional Chinese: 攝提- Boötes; symbol:ɳ) and is
sometimes called Sheti.
The 60-year cycle consists of two separate cycles interacting with each other. The first is the cycle of
ten heavenly stems, namely the Five Elements (in order Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water) in their ip
Yin and Yang forms.
The second is the cycle of the twelve Zodiac animal signs (生肖 shēngxiào) or Earthly Branches . They
are in order as follows: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep (ram or goat), monkey,
rooster, dog, and boar. In Vietnam the rabbit is replaced by the cat.
This combination creates the 60-year cycle due to the least amount of years (least common multiple) it
would take to get from Yang Wood Rat to its next iteration, which always starts with Yang Wood Rat
and ends with Yin Water Boar. Since the zodiac animal cycle of 12 is divisible by two, every zodiac
sign can also only occur in either Yin or Yang: the dragon is always yang, the snake is always yin, etc.
The current cycle began in 1984 (as shown in "Table of the sixty year calendar" below).
When trying to traverse the lunisolar calendar, an easy rule to follow is that years that end in an even
number are yang, those that end with an odd number are yin. The cycle proceeds as follows:
•If the year ends in 0 it is Yang Metal.
•If the year ends in 1 it is Yin Metal.
•If the year ends in 2 it is Yang Water.
•If the year ends in 3 it is Yin Water.
•If the year ends in 4 it is Yang Wood.
•If the year ends in 5 it is Yin Wood.
•If the year ends in 6 it is Yang Fire.
•If the year ends in 7 it is Yin Fire.
•If the year ends in 8 it is Yang Earth.
•If the year ends in 9 it is Yin Earth.
However, since the (traditional) Chinese zodiac follows the (lunisolar) Chinese calendar, the switchover
date is the Chinese New Year, not January 1 as in the Gregorian calendar. Therefore, a person who
was born in late January or early February may have the sign of the previous year. For example, if a
person was born in January 1970, his or her element would still be Yin Earth, not Yang Metal.
Similarly, although 1990 was called the year of the horse, anyone born from January 1 to January 26,
1990, was in fact born in the Year of the Snake (the sign of the previous year), because the 1990 Year of
the Horse did not begin until January 27, 1990. For this reason, many online sign calculators (and
Chinese restaurant place mats) may give a person the wrong sign if he/she was born in January or early
February.
The start of a new Zodiac is also celebrated on Chinese New Year along with many other customs.

File:China 24 cardinal directions.pngThe 24 cardinal directions
Even though Chinese has words for the four cardinal directions - 北 (běi, north), 東/东 (dōng, east), 南
(nán, south), and 西 (xī, west) - Chinese mariners and astronomers/astrologers preferred using the
twelve directions of the Earthly Branches, which is somewhat similar to the modern-day practice of
English-speaking pilots using o'clock for directions. Since twelve points were not enough for sailing,
twelve midpoints were added. Instead of combining two adjacent direction names, they assigned new
names as follows:
• For the four diagonal directions, appropriate trigram names of I Ching were used.
• For the rest, the Heavenly Stems were used. According to the Five Elements theory, east is
assigned to wood, and the Stems of wood are 甲 (jiǎ) and 乙 (yǐ). Thus they were assigned
clockwise to the two adjacent points of the east.
Following is a table of the 24 directions:

The Chinese use a 12 years cycle for time-reckoning called Earthly Branches.
• There are twenty-four hours in a day in all, with twelve hours for a half a day. The hours are
numbered from one to twelve for both the ante meridiem (a.m.) half of the day and the post
meridiem (p.m.) half of the day. 12:00 after a.m. and before p.m. (in the middle of the day) is
midday or noon, and 12:00 after p.m. and before a.m. (in the middle of the night) is midnight. A
new day is considered to start with the stroke of midnight. Furthermore, the basic units of time
(60 seconds, 60 minutes, 24 hours) can all perfectly divide by twelve.
Music
• Twelve is the number of pitch classes in an octave, not counting the duplicated (octave) pitch. In
music, an octave ( Play (help·info)), is the interval between one musical pitch and another with
half or double its frequency. The octave relationship is a natural phenomenon which has been
referred to as the "basic miracle of music," the use of which is "common in most musical
systems."[1] It may be derived from the harmonic series as the interval between the first and
second harmonics.
In most Western music, there ares the genres of music originating in the Western world (Europe and its
former colonies) including Western classical music, American Jazz, Country and Western, pop music
and rock and roll. The word Western may be misleading as the definition of the western world has
changed over time and because of the inclusion of Western influenced genres.
Musical genres in the Western tradition include:
• Classical music
• Medieval music
• Renaissance music
• Baroque music
• Classical music era
• Romantic music
• 20th century classical music
• Contemporary music
• Pop and popular music

the octave is divided into 12 semitones (see musical tuning).
A semitone, also called a half step or a half tone,[1] is the smallest musical interval commonly used in
Western tonal music,[2] and it is considered the most dissonant
These semitones are usually equally spaced out in a method known as equal temperament.
n twelve-tone equal temperament all semitones are equal in size. Any equal-tempered interval can be
defined in terms of an appropriate number of semitones (e.g. an octave is 12 semitones wide). In other
tuning systems the term "semitone" refers to a family of intervals which may vary both in size and
name. Often a distinction is made between a diatonic semitone (notated as a minor second), and a
chromatic semitone (as an augmented unison). These are enharmonically equivalent in equal
temperament. A diatonic semitone may further be distinguished into a major diatonic semitone, 16:15
or 112 cents, and a minor diatonic semitone, 17:16 or 105 cents.[4] The minor diatonic semitone may
be derived from the harmonic series as the interval between the sixteenth and seventeenth harmonics.
In the following table the sizes of various just intervals are compared against their equal tempered
counterparts, given as a ratio as well as cents.

(These mappings from equal temperament to just intonation are by no means unique. The minor
seventh, for example, can be meaningfully said to approximate 9/5, 7/4, or 16/9 depending on context.
The 7/4 ratio is used to emphasize this tuning's poor fit to the 7th partial in the harmonic series.)Many
times singers will be described as having a four-octave range or a five-octave range. This is technically
a misnomer, and is described here: five-octave vocal range. It is important to remember when hearing
this description that a piano has 7+1⁄3 octaves total.
Twelve-string guitar
The twelve-string guitar is an acoustic or electric
guitar with 12 strings in 6 courses, which produces a richer, more ringing tone than a standard sixstring
guitar. Because it is substantially more difficult to pluck individual strings on the twelve-string
guitar, and almost impossible to bend notes tunefully, the instrument is rarely used for lead musical
parts. 12-string guitar is however primarily suited to a rhythm or accompaniment role and is often used
in folk songs and some popular music. Some hard rock and progressive rock musicians use doublenecked
guitars, which have both six-string and twelve-string components, allowing the guitarist easy
transition between different sounds. The double ranks of strings of the 12-string guitar produce a
shimmering chorus effect. To produce this effect individual string sounds with roughly the same timbre
and nearly (but never exactly) the same pitch converge and are perceived as one. When the effect is
produced successfully, none of the constituent sounds is perceived as being out of tune. Rather, this
amalgam of sounds has a rich, shimmering quality which would be absent if the sound came from a
single source. The effect is more apparent when listening to sounds that sustain for longer periods of
time, such as a long guitar chord.
Performers who use acoustic 12-string guitars span a range of genres, from folk (Arlo Guthrie, Gordon
Lightfoot and Pete Seeger) and traditional blues (Lead Belly) to folk rock (Paul Simon, Neil Young,
John Allan Cameron), country (Pinmonkey's Michael Reynolds) and rock bands ( George Harrison [1] of
The Beatles, David Bowie for his Space Oddity live performances, Pete Townshend of The Who, Tom
Petty and Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and Brian May of Queen).[2] Numerous
other musicians, including Leo Kottke, Roger McGuinn of The Byrds, Matt Nathanson and John
Butler, use it as their main instrument.
Electric Rickenbacker 12-string users include a range of jangle pop guitarists, ranging from McGuinn
to Peter Buck (R.E.M.). The Gibson EDS-1275 electric 12-string was used by blues rock/early heavy
metal guitarist Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, Alex Lifeson of Rush, Tom
Morello of Rage Against the Machine, System of a Down & Scars on Broadway guitarist Daron
Malakian.
••
12 IS ALSO the total number of major keys, (not counting enharmonic equivalents) and the
total number of minor keys (also not counting equivalents). This applies only to twelve tone
equal temperament, the most common tuning used today in western influenced music.
• The twelfth is the interval of an octave and a fifth.
The name of any interval is further qualified using the terms perfect, major, minor, augmented,
and diminished. This is called its interval quality.

It is possible to have doubly-diminished and doubly-augmented intervals, but these are quite rare.
The name of an interval cannot, in general, be determined by counting semitones alone. For example,
there are four semitones between B and E♭, however this interval is a diminished fourth—an interval
found between the seventh and third degrees of the harmonic minor scale—rather than a major third. In
equal-tempered tuning, as on a piano, these intervals are indistinguishable by sound, but the diatonic
function of the notes incorporated might be very different.
• Major/minor:
Major/minor intervals are so called because rather than containing one number of semitones they are at
a lower, minor, or higher, major, number. For example, the minor sixth is 8 semitones and the major
sixth is 9 semitones.
• Perfect:
Perfect intervals are so called because they are neither minor nor major (such as thirds, which are either
minor or major) but perfect. For example, the perfect fifth is 7 semitones and may not be major or
minor.
• Augmented/diminished:
Augmented/diminished intervals are so called because rather than containing one number of semitones
they are at a lower, diminished, or higher, augmented, number. For example, the diminished second is 0
semitones and the augmented second is 3 semitones, while the augmented fourth and the diminished
fifth are both 6 semitones.
Cents
Main article: Cent (music)
The standard system for comparing intervals of different sizes is with cents. This is a logarithmic scale
in which the octave is divided into 1200 equal parts. In equal temperament, each semitone is exactly
100 cents. The value in cents for the interval f1 to f2 is 1200×log2(f2/f1).

colors (orange, green & purple) and 6 tertiary colors (names for these vary, but are
intermediates between the primaries and secondaries).

rom Opticks. 1704, from Book I, Part II, Proposition VI, Problem 2.
"In a mixture of primary colours, the quantity and quality of each being given, to know the colour of
the compound."
Throughout Opticks, Newton compared colours in the spectrum to a run of musical notes. To this
purpose, he used a Dorian scale, similar to a white-note scale on the piano, starting at D. He divided his
colour wheel in musical proportions round the circumference, in the arcs from DE to CD. Each
segment was given a spectral colour, starting from red at DE, through orange, yellow, green, blew [sic],
indigo, to violet in CD. (The colours are commonly known as ROY G BIV.)
The middle of the colours—their 'centres of gravity'—are shown by p, q, r, s, t, u, and x. The centre of
the circle, at O, was presumed to be white. Newton went on to describe how a non-spectral colour, such
as z, could be described by its distance from O and the corresponding spectral colour, Y.

A solstice is an astronomical event that happens twice each year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is
most inclined toward or away from the Sun, causing the Sun's apparent position in the sky to reach its
northernmost or southernmost extreme. The name is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to
stand still), because at the solstices, the Sun stands still in declination; that is, the apparent movement
of the Sun's path north or south comes to a stop before reversing direction.
The term solstice can also be used in a broader sense, as the date (day) when this occurs. The solstices,
together with the equinoxes, are connected with the seasons. In some cultures they are considered to
start or separate the seasons while in others they fall in the middle.
he cause of the seasons is that the Earth's axis of rotation is not perpendicular to its orbital plane (the
flat plane made through the center of mass (barycenter) of the solar system (near or within the Sun) and
the successive locations of Earth during the year), but currently makes an angle of about 23.44° (called
the "obliquity of the ecliptic"), and that the axis keeps its orientation with respect to inertial space. As a
consequence, for half the year (from around 20 March to 22 September) the northern hemisphere is
inclined toward the Sun, with the maximum around 21 June, while for the other half year the southern
hemisphere has this distinction, with the maximum around 21 December. The two moments when the
inclination of Earth's rotational axis has maximum effect are the solstices. At the northern solstice the
subsolar point reaches to 23.44° north, known as the tropic of Cancer. Likewise at the southern solstice
the same thing happens for latitude 23.44° south, known as the tropic of Capricorn. The sub-solar point
will cross every latitude between these two extremes exactly twice per year.
In mathematics
Twelve is a composite number, the smallest number with exactly six divisors, its proper divisors being
1, 2, 3, 4, and 6. Twelve is also a highly composite number, the next one being 24. It is the first
composite number of the form p2q; a square prime, and also the first member of the (p2) family in this
form. 12 has an aliquot sum of 16 (133% in abundance). Accordingly, 12 is the first abundant number
(in fact a superabundant number) and demonstrates an 8 member aliquot sequence;
{12,16,15,9,4,3,1,0} 12 is the 3rd composite number in the 3-aliquot tree. The only number which has
12 as its aliquot sum is the square 121. Only 2 other square primes are abundant (18 and 20).
Twelve is a sublime number, a number that has a perfect number of divisors, and the sum of its divisors
is also a perfect number. Since there is a subset of 12's proper divisors that add up to 12 (all of them but
with 4 excluded), 12 is a semiperfect number.
If an odd perfect number is of the form 12k + 1, it has at least twelve distinct prime factors.
Twelve is a superfactorial, being the product of the first three factorials. Twelve being the product of
three and four, the first four positive integers show up in the equation 12 = 3 × 4, which can be
continued with the equation 56 = 7 × 8.
Twelve is the ninth Perrin number, preceded in the sequence by 5, 7, 10, and also appears in the
Padovan sequence, preceded by the terms 5, 7, 9 (it is the sum of the first two of these). It is the fourth
Pell number, preceded in the sequence by 2 and 5 (it is the sum of the former plus twice the latter).
A twelve-sided polygon is a dodecagon.
A twelve-faced polyhedron is a dodecahedron.
In geometry, a dodecahedron (Greek δωδεκάεδρον, from δώδεκα 'twelve' + εδρον 'base', 'seat' or
'face') is any polyhedron with twelve faces, but usually a regular dodecahedron is meant: a Platonic
solid. It is composed of 12 regular pentagonal faces, with three meeting at each vertex, and is
represented by the Schläfli symbol {5,3}. It has 20 vertices and 30 edges. Its dual polyhedron is the
icosahedron, with Schläfli symbol {3,5}
This is a rotating dodecahedron
large number of other (nonregular) polyhedra also have 12 sides, but are given other names. The most
frequently named other dodecahedron is the rhombic dodecahedron.
If the original dodecahedron has edge length 1, its dual icosahedron has edge length , the
Golden Ratio Ancient Greek mathematicians first studied what we now call the golden ratio because
of its frequent appearance in geometry. The division of a line into "extreme and mean ratio" (the golden
section) is important in the geometry of regular pentagrams and pentagons. The Greeks usually
attributed discovery of this concept to Pythagoras or his followers. The regular pentagram, which has a
regular pentagon inscribed within it, was the Pythagoreans' symbol
Some studies of the Acropolis, including the Parthenon, conclude that many of its proportions
approximate the golden ratio
Some suggest that his Mona Lisa, for example, employs the golden ratio in its geometric equivalents.
[26]
Whether Leonardo proportioned his paintings according to the golden ratio has been the subject of
intense debate. The secretive Leonardo seldom disclosed the bases of his art, and retrospective analysis
of the proportions in his paintings can never be conclusive
Leonardo's most famous painting of the 1490s is
The Last Supper, also painted in Mila
Leonardo's most famous painting of the 1490s is The Last Supper, also painted in Mila, notice he is
surrounded by 12, if you count the 4 windowds on the left and the right + the 3 behind jesus, and the
one grey one on the table it equals 12, and if you count the ceiling grid, its six spaces across and 6
down, 6+6=12 6x6=36/3=12 the math is all there, and related to music, jesus would complete an
octave, being the 13th person, the ascension to another place., or another octave.
Salvador Dalí explicitly used the golden ratio in his masterpiece, The Sacrament of the Last Supper.
The dimensions of the canvas are a golden rectangle. A huge dodecahedron, with edges in golden ratio
to one another, is suspended above and behind Jesus and dominates the composition. Which of course
jesus in the last supper painting is surrounded by 12...disciples.
Both Egyptian pyramids and those mathematical regular square pyramids that resemble them can be
analyzed with respect to the golden ratio and other ratios.
The snub dodecahedron has 92 faces, of which 12 are pentagons and the
other 80 are equilateral triangles. It also has 150 edges, and 60 vertices. It has two distinct forms, which
are mirror images (or "enantiomorphs") of each other.
if you study this you will see its a way to map out the 12 points of the sunkingz music
geoemetry clock. 12 points created from the inner circle where the out circles intersect it,
counting the middle horizontal and verticle points. This is also a secret of solomons temple,
which the inner temple circle is created using these exact mathematics.
Regular cubes and octahedrons both have 12 edges, while regular icosahedrons have 12 vertices.
Twelve is a pentagonal number.
A pentagonal number is a figurate number that extends the concept of triangular and square numbers
to the pentagon, but, unlike the first two, the patterns involved in the construction of pentagonal
numbers are not rotationally symmetrical. The first few pentagonal numbers are: 1, 5, 12, 22, 35, 51,
70, 92, 117, 145, 176, 210, 247, 287, 330, 376, 425, 477, 532, 590, 651, 715, 782, 852, 925, 1001
The densest three-dimensional lattice sphere packing has each sphere touching 12 others, and this is
almost certainly true for any arrangement of spheres (the Kepler conjecture). Twelve is also the kissing
number in three dimensions.
Twelve is the smallest weight for which a cusp form exists. This cusp form is the discriminant Δ(q)
whose Fourier coefficients are given by the Ramanujan τ-function and which is (up to a constant
multiplier) the 24th power of the Dedekind eta function. This fact is related to a constellation of
interesting appearances of the number twelve in mathematics ranging from the value of the Riemann
zeta function function at -1 i.e. ζ(-1)=-1/12, the fact that the abelianization of SL(2,Z) has twelve
elements, and even the properties of lattice polygons.
There are twelve Jacobian elliptic functions.
The duodecimal system (1210 [twelve] = 1012), which is the use of 12 as a division factor for many
ancient and medieval weights and measures, including hours, probably originates from Mesopotamia.
In base thirteen and higher bases (such as hexadecimal), twelve is represented as C. In base 10, the
number 12 is a Harshad number.

The 12-bar blues is one of the most popular chord progressions in popular music, including the blues. The blues progression has a distinctive form in lyrics and phrase and chord structure and duration. It is, at its most basic, based on the I-IV-V chords of a key.
The blues can be played in any key, but guitar and bass players prefer open chords, that is, chords with several open strings: E-A-B7 or A-D-E7. Keyboardists may prefer chords with fewer black keys, such as C-F-G7 or G-C-D7.
n jazz, 12 bar blues progressions are expanded with moving substitutions and chordal variations. The cadence (or last four measures) uniquely leads to the root by perfect intervals of fourths.
There are also minor 12-bar blues, such as "Why Don't You Do Right?", made famous by Lil Green with Big Bill Broonzy and then Peggy Lee with the Benny Goodman Orchestra. Major and minor can also be mixed together, a signature characteristic of the music of Charles Brown.
The 12-bar blues chord progression is the basis of thousands of songs, not only formally identified blues songs such as "Stevie's Blues" "Tommy Emmanuel", "St. Louis Blues", "Shake, Rattle and Roll" and "Hound Dog", but also gospel songs, such as "I'm So Glad (Jesus Lifted Me)", jazz classics like "One O'Clock Jump" and "Night Train", pop and rock songs, including Glenn Miller's "In the Mood", The Beatles' "Why Don't We Do It In The Road?", and The Clash's "Should I Stay or Should I Go", Top 40 hits like Fabian's "Turn Me Loose", "At the Hop" by Danny and the Juniors, and the Theme from the Batman TV Series. The vast majority of boogie woogie compositions are 12-bar blues, as are many instrumentals, such as "Rumble" and "Honky Tonk".[citation needed]
Examples of blues twelve bar blues include Muddy Waters' "Train Fare Blues" (1948), Howlin' Wolf's "Evil" (1954), and Big Joe Turner's "Shake, Rattle, and Roll" (1954). (Covach 2005, p. 67)
The song “Mother”, written by Andy Summers and included on The Police’s Synchronicity album, uses a twelve-bar minor-chord blues structure in 7/8 as its musical accompaniment.
Led Zeppelin’s song “Rock and Roll”, from their fourth album, alternates the progression length within the song. Each instrumental verse (including the introduction and the guitar solo) is a twelve-bar blues, while each sung verse is a 24-bar blues, with each bar of the progression being held for two bars instead of one.
Chuck Berry's "Oh Carol" is a 24-bar blues, with each line doubled in length by the addition of a guitar lick after the vocal part.
The melodies of The Beatles's "Day Tripper", Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade", and "Boddhisattva" by Steely Dan start with the first eight bars of the 12-bar progression.
The 12-inch single gramophone record came into existence with the advent of disco music in the 1970s
Also worth noting is that the visual spacing of the grooves on the 12" assisted the DJ in locating the approximate area of the "breaks" on the disc's surface (without having to listen as he dropped and re-dropped the stylus to find the right point)
A broader dynamic range or louder recording level requires more space as the grooves' excursions (i.e., the width of the groove waves and distance traveled from side to side by the turntable stylus) become much greater in amplitude, especially in the bass frequencies so important for dance music. Many record companies began producing 12-inch (30 cm) singles at 33 1/3 rpm, as the slower speed enhances the bass on the record. By the same token, however, 45 rpm gives better treble response and was used on many 12-inch singles, especially in the UK.

Many record labels produced mainly 12-inch singles (in addition to albums) during the 1980s, such as Factory Records, who only ever released a handful of 7-inch (18 cm) records. One of Factory's resident artists, alternative rock/dance quartet New Order, produced the biggest-selling 12 inch record ever in United Kingdom, "Blue Monday", selling about 800,000 copies on the format and over a million copies in total. It was somewhat helped by the fact that Factory did not release a 7-inch version of the single until 1988, five years after the single was originally released as a 12 inch only release.
The term "12-inch" usually refers to a single with several remixes. Now that advances in compact disc player technology have made the CD acceptable for mixing and "turntablism", the term maxi single is increasingly used.

Israelites
In the Bible, the Israelites (sometimes referred to as "The Twelve Tribes") were the descendants of the Biblical patriarch Jacob. They were divided into twelve tribes, each descended from one of twelve sons or grandsons of Jacob.

Mosaic of the 12 Tribes of Israel. From a synagogue wall in Jerusalem. The term Israelite in English was first used in the King James translation of the Bible to refer to those people who in the Hebrew are referred to as Bnei Yisrael (literally "Sons of Israel" or "Children of Israel")
Rastafari

Some Rastas believe that the black races are the lost Israelites – literally or spiritually[14]. They interpret the Bible as implying that Haile Selassie was the returned Messiah,
who would lead the world's peoples of African descent into a promised land of full emancipation and divine justice. There are some Rastafarians that believe they are Jews by descent through Ras Tafari, Ras Tafari being a descendant of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba via Menelik I. One Rastafari order named The Twelve Tribes of Israel, imposes a metaphysical astrology whereby Aries is Reuben, Aquarius is Joseph, etc. The Twelve Tribes of Israel differ from most Rastafari Mansions (sects) because they believe that Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior, while other Mansions claim that Haile Selassie I is the true God. With his famous early reggae song The Israelites, Desmond Dekker immortalised the Rastafari concept of themselves as the Lost Children of Israel. However, sometimes people native to Africa are identified with descendants of Ham, whereas the Old Testament of the Bible states that Abraham is descended from Shem.

In Christianity, apostles (Ancient Greek: ἀπόστολος apostolos, one sent forth as a messenger)[1] were missionaries among the leaders in the Early Church and, in the Epistle to the Hebrews,[3:1] Jesus Christ himself.[2] The term was also used, especially by the Gospel of Luke, for "the Twelve," Jesus' inner circle of disciples (students).[2] They were, according to the Acts of the Apostles and Christian tradition, disciples whom Jesus of Nazareth had chosen, named, and trained in order to send them on a specific mission: the establishment of the Christian Church by evangelism and the spreading of the "good news", after being sent the Holy Spirit as "helper" (paraclete) in this task at Pentecost
Traditionally, the Twelve include Peter (whom some denominations consider the "Prince of the Apostles");[3] Andrew, James the Greater, James the Lesser, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, Thaddeus, Simon, and Judas Iscariot. Judas had been one of the Twelve, but he betrayed Jesus and killed himself.[4] With Judas gone, Matthias became one of the Twelve.[Acts 1:15-26] In the Synoptic Gospels, Mark names the Twelve, Matthew follows Mark, and Luke substitutes Jude for Mark's Thaddeus.

John refers to the Twelve without naming them all, adds the name Nathanael, and uses the term "beloved disciple"

Jesus' inner circle of twelve disciples probably corresponds to the twelve tribes of Israel. In the Synoptics, Jesus selects Peter, James, and John to witness his divine Transfiguration and to be with him when he prays at Gethsemane. In Mark, the Twelve are obtuse, failing to understand the importance of Jesus' miracles and parables.[5] The book of Acts recounts the deeds of the apostles in the years after Jesus' crucifixion.

According to canonical Gospels, Jesus rose from the dead after three days and appeared to his Disciples on different occasions during a forty day period before ascending to heaven.

In Mark, Jesus is crucified along with two rebels, and the day goes dark for three hours
